“There is still crackling fire this morning,” says Caritas Goma Head of Emergencies Eddy Yamwenziyo. “But it’s very sporadic and is just shooting in the air.”
Congolese ‘M23’ rebels entered Goma this morning according to Radio Okapi. Goma is a city of about a million people in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo on the border with Rwanda.
“There is no electricity,” says Taylor Kakala, Caritas Goma’s Communication officer, speaking to us as the batteries run down on his cell phone. “I do not know how long my cell phone will last and when I can recharge it.”
Taylor’s house is located in the administrative district of Goma near the government army barracks.
“I know this is not an ideal position, I’m trapped at home with my wife and three children aged five, three and one. I dare not go out with them, our instructions are not to move until we have a better idea of what is going on,” he says.
The two employees of Caritas Goma are listening to the radio for updates. “We must wait to see if the M23 rebels make an official statement saying we can begin our work again in a more secure situation.”
Information on the humanitarian situation remains vague, but according to information collected by Taylor Kakala, people have deserted the largest relief camp of Kanyaruchina yesterday. People have moved north he says.

The figures provided by Eddy Yamwenziyo and unconfirmed are that 50,000 to 70,000 displaced people are moving west to reach Mugunga camp run by the UN’s relief agency UNHCR. More than 20,000 people have spent the night on the roadside, without shelter, our Caritas colleagues say.
M23 est entré sur Goma
Le journal de treize heure de Radio Okapi vient d’annoncé que le M23 est entré en ville de Goma. Pour Eddy Yamwenziyo, responsable des urgences à Caritas Goma , la situation est plutôt calme « il y a encore des crépitements de tirs mais depuis ce matin très sporadique et sans engagement, plutôt des tirs en l’air ».
“La nuit a été calme vers huit heures du soirs les tirs ont cessez sur Goma. “déclare Taylor Kakala communicateur pour Caritas Goma. “Nous sommes dans le noir, il n’y a plus d’électricité, je ne sais pas pour combien de temps mon téléphone portable marchera et quand je pourrais recharger les batteries.”
La maison de Taylor est située dans la quartier administratif de Goma à quelques mètres a peine du Quartier General de l’état major. “Je sais que ce n’est pas idéal comme position, je suis coincé à la maison , avec ma femme et mes trois enfants de cinq, trois et un ans. Je n’ose pas sortir avec eux , nos instructions sont de ne pas bouger tant que nous n’avons pas plus d’information sur les développements de la situation'” dit Taylor.
Les deux employés de Caritas Goma attentent un nouveau communique radio « Je pense que le M23 va faire un communique officiel , de sorte que nous puissions recommencer nos activités dans la région dans des conditions de sécurité acceptables, » déclare Eddy .
Les informations sur la situation humanitaires restent vague, mais d’après les informations collectées par Taylor, le plus grand camp de déplacé Kanyaruchina s’est entièrement vidé depuis hier . un large mouvement de déplacés s’ajoute au départ de la population locale dans le Nord . Les chiffres fournis par Eddy et non confirmés , sont de 50’000 a 70’000 déplacés se dirigeant vers l’ouest.
