Caritas events at World Youth Day
By Daniel Alejandro Pinilla, Caritas Internationalis

This is the first week of my internship at Caritas Internationalis in Rome. Like many other young people around the world, I talk about issues which touch all of us and will follow closely what is said and done at World Youth Day (WYD).

WYD is one of the most anticipated events of recent years for the Church in Brazil and also in Latin America. Between 24th and 28th July over a million young people will go to Rio de Janeiro to share thoughts and prayers and to celebrate their faith with Pope Francis. Caritas Brazil has been preparing for months to make the WYD experience unforgettable.

Already from 13th to 16th July, Caritas Brazil has organised a “Meeting of the Young People of Caritas” in Belo Horizonte. The Caritas pilgrims will have the chance to prepare spiritually and mentally for WYD by taking part in masses, discussing global themes such as the Caritas anti-poverty campaign and its theme of the right to food and simply learning how to live together better.

WYD has organised Mission Week from 15th to 22nd July in various dioceses in Brazil during which pilgrims can discuss the themes of spirituality, culture and solidarity.

On 23rd July, Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga, president of Caritas Internationalis, will hold a “lunch for the young people of Caritas” during which he will discuss with them the problems of violence and hunger, and their dreams for the future, among other things. Later that same day, Cardinal Rodriguez will celebrate mass with young pilgrims.

On the mornings of 24th, 25th and 26th July, pilgrims can attend catecheses with prelates from around the world. Cardinal Rodriguez will give catecheses on these days about justice, memory and youth engagement in important issues.

Caritas Brazil will have a space where people can go and visit and talk in the “Tienda das Juventudes” – the young people’s tent. This massive marquis will host initiatives by various organisations. Caritas is collaborating with some of them to produce a photo exhibition on martyrs from around the world.

Pope Francis arrives in Brazil on 22nd July. On 24th July he will visit the Shrine of Aparecida outside of Rio. World Youth Day will officially begin on 25th when the Holy Father receives hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of young people on Rio’s famous Copacobana beach. On 26th he will lead the Way of the Cross. Following a vigil on Saturday night Pope Francis will celebrate the closing mass on 28th.
