Caritas Chile has launched the campaign ‘For a Caring Country’ to collect items to help people affected by last week’s powerful earthquake.

Thirteen people died and one million people were evacuated following the 8.3 magnitude earthquake on 16th September.

“We know that emergencies generate a lot of immediate public attention, but even though their effects are long-term the public loses interest after a while and sometimes even forget about them,” says Lorenzo Figueroa, Executive Director of Caritas Chile.

“This is why we’re reaching out to everyone to commit to actively helping those dealing with the immediate effects of the earthquake by helping repair homes and providing essential items people might need. People can do this by taking part in our campaign ‘For a Caring Country.’

Caritas Chile, in collaboration with the Archdiocese of Santiago, has started collecting food, hygiene and household articles as part of the campaign.

The earthquake struck off Chile’s coast and tsunami warnings were given out as far away as New Zealand, Coquimbo, Illapel and Salamanca. Anti-seismic buildings and timely public information reduced the severe impact of this massive earthquake.

A Caritas emergency team will be at the most-affected areas to give technical support and advice to diocesan teams.
