Congo (DR) EA 33
Caritas has launched an emergency appeal to help 90,000 people uprooted by violence in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Renewed fighting in North and South Kivu since the end of August has hit the civilian population hard with an estimated 100,000 people fleeing their homes and taking shelter in camps. The appeal for US$1.5 million will fund the urgent non-food needs of people uprooted in North Kivu.
Cuba – hurricanes EA 32
Caritas is appealing for US$1 million to help 25,000 people in Cuba who were affected by Hurricanes Ike and Gustav. In a three-month project, Caritas aims to provide food, construction materials and kitchen and hygiene kits to those recovering from the hurricanes which swept over the island in late August and early September.
Georgia – war displaced EA 31
Conflict between Russia and Russian backed troops and Georgia resulted in 64,000 people homeless. Caritas is launching an appeal for $250,000 to provide 3000 beneficiaries with food and other aid items, and healthcare in Tbilisi and Gori.
Haiti – hurricanes EA 30
Caritas is helping flood victims in Haiti and has provided food rations to 20,000 people across six departments after several tropical storms caused flooding, landslides and sea surges. Caritas is also distributing bottled water, hygiene kits, household items and providing temporary shelter to families affected by the floods. An emergency appeal for US$4.3 million has been launched to respond to immediate needs.
Nepal - floods emergency relief EA 29
Caritas has appealed for US$615,000 to help 42,000 people in Nepal who have been affected by flooding after the Saptakoshi dam burst in the east of the country. Caritas initially distributed food rations including rice, dal, potatoes and dried beans to 15,000 people in the immediate aftermath of the August floods
India - emergency response to Bihar floods EA 28
Caritas is appealing for US $5,600,000 to help survivors of catastrophic flooding in northeast India. Over 2,500,000 people in the IndianState of Bihar have had to flee the rising flood waters after the KosiRiver broke its banks on 18 August following heavy monsoon rains. Caritas Internationalis, the umbrella organisation for 162 national charities, plans to provide food for 270,000 people with a one-month dry food ration per family, basic temporary shelter materials, and essential household items.

Romania - floods EA 27
Floods affected more than 150 villages in North Eastern Romania, completely destroying about 1600 houses. Up to 16000 persons had to be evacuated during the flood period. Caritas is appealling for US $300,000 to improve the general living conditions of 600 families during a medium term period over 7 months.
North and South Ossetia - conflict EA 26
Caritas
is appealing for US $240,000 to last four months to provide essential basic humanitarian assistance to 500 refugees (100 families) who have fled to North Ossetia following the conflict between Georgia and Russia. An estimated 30,000 refugees from South Ossetia have crossed the Russian border into North Ossetia as a result of the fighting.
Georgia - people homeless due to conflict EA 25
Conflict in Georgia drove over 120,000 people from their homes. Caritas is appealing for US $256,500 to feed 1000, and provide 6,500 people with basic primary health care coverage, 1100 people for psycho-social services.
Senegal - food security EA 24
Poor harvests and rising food prices have created serious food security problems in Senegal. Caritas is appealing for US $512,000 to feed over 40,000 people and help over 200,000 indirectly.
Appeal duration is three months from 15 August until 15 November.

Flooding caused by heavy rains affected 2 million people. Caritas is appealing for US $600,000 to provide food, household items, and medical care to 10,000 people over three months.

Bulgaria – Rehabilitation for floods in Tsar Kaloyan EA 18
On 6 August 2007, the Bulgarian town Tsar Kaloyan was badly struck by a flood that affected 4000. Caritas appeal is for US$ 605 392 to build houses for 28 families. Project Implementation is 6 months (1 July 2008 – 31 December 2008)
Ethiopia - Children dying of hunger EA 17
Failed rains in Ethiopia have led to a sharp rise in malnutrition rates. Caritas is appealling for US$1.3 million to provide food, drinking water and medicines for 26,500 mothers and children for five months.

Over half of Haitians cannot afford access to enough food following steep hike in prices. Caritas is appealing for U$ 2, 864,454.6 will provide food for 100,000 people (20700 families). The appeal runs until May 2009.
Niger – Support to people made homeless by conflict EA 15
The appeal follows conflict in the north of Niger that has forced communities from their homes. The appeal is for US$ 750,000 to supply food aid and non-food items to 2570 families. The project runs until May 2009.

Kenya Post Election Violence – Early Recovery and Rehabilitation EA 14
The appeal follows political violence in Kenya in early 2008 that affected 300,000 people. The appeal is for US$ 1,586,520 to provide 25,500 people directly and 150,000 people indirectly with access to food, shelter and resettlement, water, sanitation and hygiene, psychosocial, peace building and reconciliation. Project duration is 12 months, May 2008 to April 2009.
Cameroon – Support for Chadian Refugees and Local Population EA 13
Recovery and rehabilitation appeal for Chadian refugees who left their homes for Cameroon due to conflict and the local hosting population. Appeal is for US$ 2,446,168 for three refugee camps with 57,000 people in total and 25,000 people in local villages with access to food, water, sanitation, economic and agricultural development, education and capacity building. Project duration is May 2008 to September 2008.
Myanmar - Emergency Relief to Cyclone Nargis EA 12
Rapid response in Myanmar to Cyclone Nargis, which affected 2.5 million people. Direct beneficiaries targeted by the project is presently planned to be 60,000 persons. This may increase to over 75,000. Appeal will cover water, sanitation and hygiene promotion, food security, nutrition and food aid, shelter, settlement, health services, psycho-social support, child protection, and livelihoods (cash for work). Duration of project: 3 months, starting 15 May 2008.

Zambia – Emergency and Recovery assistance for floods EA 10
Rains in the southern provinces of Zambia towards the end of 2007 through early 2008 affected 480,000 people. Appeal for US$1.998, 401 to help 24,000 of the most vulnerable people affected, such as child and women-headed households with emergency food aid, alongside seeds and fertilizer for fast winter cropping, farming equipment and technical training in crops, including post-harvest storage and marketing. Duration April 2008 to March 2009.
Pakistan - Floods in Baluchistan and Sindh Provinces of Pakistan EA 09
Heavy rains, flash floods and dam breakages caused by Cyclone Yemin in June 2007 affected the southern part of Pakistan, making thousands homeless. This appeal for US$ 4,740,194 focuses on the construction of 2,600 houses, the setting up of free medical camps, providing livelihoods, building five dams, and installing four water pumps and 12 hand pumps. 3,450 people helped directly and up to 50,000 through the health services. Duration is three years.
Madagascar – Rapid response for Cyclone Ivan EA 08
Cyclone Ivan struck Madagascar in February leaving 187,000 people homeless. The appeal is for US$1.4 million (€933,593) for the provision of food and non-food items to 74,687 people. A month of food supplies will be provided, along with items including blankets and jerry cans. Duration is one month
Ecuador – Assistance following floods EA 07
Torrential rains in to extensive flooding and mudslides across the country, forcing some 250,000 from their homes. US$520,000 (€341,000) to provide food rations, medical aid, hygiene kits and material to help rebuild people’s homes. 25,000 people will be helped. Duration is 90 days.

An earthquake struck Africa's Great Lakes region on 3 February 2008. Appeal for US$ 548,477 (€360,000) to renovate 900 homes which were destroyed or damaged for 4,500 people. Duration is from March 2008 to June 2008

Mozambique – Assistance to survivors of floods EA 05
Central Mozambique has been repeatedly hit by massive floods since mid December 2007, leaving more than 258,000 people homeless and an estimated 89,786 hectares of agricultural land has been lost. US$811,331 (€579,104) needed to provide access to water, sanitation, and to increase food production and support livelihoods for 20,700 people directly plus another 10,000 living in surrounding areas. Duration is from February to June.
Bolivia – Assistance to survivors of floods EA 04
Severe flooding in eastern Bolivia left 100,000 people homeless and in need of food and shelter. $US 717,000 appeal for food aid, distribution of blankets and hygiene kits, provision of medical kits by doctors, and agricultural rehabilitation for 5,000 families. For agriculture, provisions including seeds and livestock will be distributed and workshops held in agricultural techniques, in an effort to restart production and improve livelihoods. February 2008 to February 2009
Congo (DR) – Rapid response to earthquake EA 03
An earthquake struck Eastern Congo on 3 February 2008 leaving 4,500 people with without shelter. Appeal for US$657, 172 to provide healthcare and repairs to key buildings. 9,000 people will be helped. Duration is for one month.
Cameroon – Rapid response for Chadian Refugees and Local Population EA 02
Violent clashes between Government and rebel forces in N’Djamena, Chad, resulted in up to 50,000 civilians initially crossing the border into Cameroon to seek refuge and protection. The local Church and Caritas were among the first to respond to the humanitarian needs of these refugees, 3,000 of whom are sheltering in Church buildings. Appeal for US$167,000 for shelter, food, water and sanitation, health. Duration of appeal is from February 2008 to April 2008.

Kenya – Rapid response to conflict
Help to the 255,000 people driven from their homes by violence that swept through Kenya after December’s general election. The US$2.7 million appeal aims to help 30,000 people in Rift Valley, Nyanza and Western provinces, and will include helping people get access to food and clean water, especially pregnant women and people with HIV, providing temporary shelter and items such as sleeping mats, blankets and clothing, distributing soap and sanitary items for women, providing counseling to adults and children and helping mediation between communities. Duration is 15 January to 14 April 2008.
