EA 36 - Senegal
Massive flooding in Senegal has left many people without drinking water and made them vulnerable to water-borne diseases. Caritas's project will include helping people pump water out of their homes, providing people with food and non-food items and repairing classrooms. The total budget is US$469,221 (€364 897).

EA 35 - Indonesia
More than 238 million people in Indonesia are constantly at risk of disaster, especially those who live below the poverty line. Caritas will help 6,600 people (another 13,000 will be helped indirectly) to develop resiliency in the face of disasters. The programme will include training in recognising hazards and capacity building to give people the skills to mitigate vulnerabilities. The budget totals US$322,681 (€250,938).

EA 34 - Pakistan
Caritas has launched a three-month emergency programme to help families following severe flooding in Pakistan. Caritas in Pakistan will provide tents, blankets, food and medical assistance for the next three months to many people who are in difficulty. The programme will cost US$1.4 million (€1.1 million). EA 33 - Philippines
Caritas is appealing for funds to help families in the Philippines, many of whom are living in temporary evacuation centres following massive floods. EA 32 - Somalia
Caritas will help farming households in Somalia struggling with famine following a long-term drought. Five thousand farming households will receive food to help them until the January 2013 harvest. Catholic Relief Services (a member of Caritas in the US) are heading the project. A total of US$2.6 million (€2 million) is needed. Read more

EA 31 - Sierra Leone
Thousands of people in Sierra Leone have been affected by a January outbreak of cholera. The outbreak of the disease was declared a national emergency by the country's president. Caritas has launched a one-year programme which will help 600,000 people by providing treatment for the disease and also raising awareness about how to avoid it. The budget for the project is US$849,100 (€658,634).

EA 30 - Myanmar
Lives were lost and thousands of homes were washed away when monsoons caused severe flooding in southwestern and eastern Myanmar. Caritas will provide food, shelter, improved access to drinking water and better sanitation to 4,500 households in the initial six-week project. The cost is (US$.502,558 /€. 398,669).

EA 29 - Lebanon
Conflict in Syria has driven many people over the border to Lebanon. They have often left everything behind. Caritas aims to provide them with food, blankets and household necessities and psycho-social care. This eight-month project will cost $2,237,268, equivalent to €1,786,167. Read more

Late rains and massive crop failure have made many people vulnerable to poverty and hunger in Kenya. Caritas will help over 110,000 people hit by drought with water, food, seeds to plant and training in improved farming methods. The 12-month project will cost US$4,399,084 (€ 3,409,822).

EA 27 - Ethiopia
Caritas is launching a new appeal to continue its lifesaving work in drought-stricken areas of Ethiopia. Its programmes will help farmers and herders produce more food, and will also improve water systems and infrastructure in remote areas. The project budget is US$3.2 million (€2,479,186) and will help 60,000 families improve their access to food and water during the drought. Read more

EA 26 - Nigeria
Caritas aims to make sure households in four states of Northern Nigeria have enough food by providing food vouchers or giving cash transfers to those who are vulnerable. This project will run for a period of five months which will cover the three months of the most acute hunger season until the harvest. The harvest is expected to be poor as some farmers have planted between 3-4 times this year and the crops either withered or have stunted growth due to lack of rain. The US$ 861,185 (€ 662,641) aims to help 14,000 women, children and men.

EA 25 - Bangladesh floods
In June 2012, heavy rainfall led to landslides and flash floods in several districts of Bangladesh. Caritas Bangladesh will use its extensive experience in flood response to help affected families. Caritas will supply immediate food and materials to repair damaged houses. It will also pay unemployed flood victims to repair roads, embankments, and other infrastructure. EA 24 - India floods
In June 2012, severe floods claimed lives and washed away homes in India's Assam state. Caritas India is working with the local diocese to set up medical camps for than 12,000 families in an area called Soothea. The programme is providing families with health care, medicine, water purification tablets, disinfection kits, and sanitation training. As waters recede, Caritas plans to assist beneficiaries to repair damaged houses. EA 23 - Japan tsunami recovery
Caritas Japan continues to aid communities devastated by the massive earthquake and tsunami of March 2011. This rehabilitation programme will give furniture to people moving to permanent or temporary housing; build a day service centre for the elderly; help shop owners, fishermen and farmers restart their businesses; provide psychosocial services to over 30,000 traumatized people; give meals to the elderly via a mobile kitchen; and construct an indoor playing field for students in radiation-affected areas. The EUR 4,520,208 budget is already covered by donations in Japan and from Caritas members' commitments.

EA 22 - Drought and conflict in Somaliland
Drought and violence have affected tens of thousands of families in northwest Somalia, causing many to flee to other areas. Caritas Switzerland plans to improve water systems and sanitation facilities in the for local communities and displaced people. Work will also focus on training families on good hygiene techniques and improving the health of livestock. Additionally, plans include adult literacy classes and life skills training for students. The proposed budget is €907,823.

EA 21 - Malawi food security
To prevent a hunger crisis, CADECOM (Caritas Malawi) plans to provide free food rations for 5 months to the most vulnerable or chronically ill people. It also plans to set up food-for-work programmes, distribute seeds, and train people in 75 villages on food security and disaster prevention issues. The proposed budget is Euro 994,602.

EA 20 - Paraguay floods
Heavy rainfall in the Chaco region of Paraguay caused disastrous floods that affected thousands of families. Caritas Paraguay plans to distribute hygiene kits, food rations, water storage drums with filters, plastic sheeting, blankets and more. Caritas also plans to provide medical care and medicine. The budget is 311.817 euros.

When South Sudan became an independent nation in July 2011, a new Caritas was created: Caritas South Sudan. To help the new charity combat the severe poverty faced by millions of South Sudanese, Caritas Internationalis launched an appeal to support the further development of this new national Caritas and its capacity to respond to emergencies. EA 18 - Mauritania hunger
When a food crisis threatened thousands of families in West Africa, Caritas launched programmes to address chronic food and nutritional crises in the Sahel region. Working in the rural areas of Brakna and Gorgol, Caritas is giving food to hundreds of families during the lean season, helping herdsmen rebuild their flocks, and making sure farmers have what they need for the coming crop year. The total budget is Euro 654,277.

EA 17 - Sri Lanka war recovery
A decades-long civil war destroyed homes, schools, water systems, and more in northern Sri Lanka. The war ended in 2009, but needs remain: Caritas Sri Lanka plans to continue providing houses with proper water and sanitation facilities to families who have lost their homes. It is also planning to help hundreds of displaced families who have returned to their place of origin, providing them with items they need to earn a living. The total budget is EUR 1,165,670.

EA 15 - Chad food crisis
Poor rainfall and other factors have badly hurt farmers and animal herders in Chad, causing a food crisis. Many rural people have gone to seek work elsewhere. Caritas Switzerland is working with Caritas Chad and ACORD to support farmers during the agricultural year, improving yields to avoid a vicious cycle of famine. Caritas plans to help over 100,000 people with seeds and activities aimed at improving the resilience of farmers' livelihoods. The proposed budget is 1.779.961 euros.

EA 14 - Ecuador floods
Downpours flooded large coastal and mountain areas of Ecuador, washing away homes and crops. Caritas is responding with food rations and hygiene kits for 4000 families. It will also provide medical care through the Church's mobile teams and clinics. Caritas plans to help hundreds of families repair their homes and restart their farms by providing building materials, seeds and agricultural tools.

EA 13 - Madagascar cyclones
In early 2012, two tropical cyclones destroyed homes and crops and cut people's access to health care and education. Over 330,000 people were affected, with 55,000 displaced from their homes. Caritas Madagascar will help 9,800 families in the areas hardest hit by two cyclones, making sure they have food in the short term and can improve their shelter situation and livelihoods in the longer term. Political conflict in Syria has left 9000 people dead since fighting broke out in March 2011. Amid the violence, tens of thousands of people have fled their homes. Many have sought safety in neighbouring countries such as Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. EA 10 - Peru floods
After floods struck Peru in early 2012, Caritas launched an appeal to help over 2,500 families in remote areas. Thousands of people will receive food rations, blankets, raincoats, boots, tools, water containers, and chlorine tablets to purify their water. Caritas will also help rebuild damaged homes, provide health care, and distribute medicine. Impoverished farmers who lost crops or livestock will receive animals, seeds, or hay. The programme budget is 456,594 euros.

In early 2012, over a third of Niger's population—about 16 million people—was found to be at risk of hunger. Caritas Niger began nutrition and food programmes to help hundreds of thousands of people by distributing grain and drought-resistant seeds, as well as helping malnourished children in special centres. Caritas is continuing its assistance to Sudanese families who fled their homes and are now living in refugee camps. Caritas programmes help maintain hydraulic systems so refugees have drinking water. Caritas also constructs wells and makes sure refugees have adequate sanitation facilities. Refugees receive seeds and farm tools so they can grow crops.
