HIV and Aids: A Global Picture
HIV among young women pregnant women aged 15-24 attending antenatal clinics declined in 11 of the 15 most-affected countries. 25 million people have died of AIDS since 1981. 5,700 deaths each day because of AIDS, 238 deaths an hour, 4 deaths every minute. Two-thirds of people living with AIDS live in sub-Saharan Africa. The number of people living in Eastern Europe and Central Asia has increased by 150 percent since the signing of the United Nations Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS in 2001. In Asia, the number of people living with HIV in Vietnam doubled between 2000 and 2005 and Indonesia has the fastest growing epidemic.
