Crisis in Ukraine

"The war in Ukraine is reaping innocent victims and spreading insecurity, not only among those directly affected but in a widespread and indiscriminate way for everyone".

Pope Francis, Message for the World Day of Peace, January 1st, 2023

Caritas Internationalis and its local partners Caritas Spes and Caritas Ukraine, continue to demonstrate their unwavering commitment to responding to the ongoing humanitarian emergency in Ukraine. Their collective efforts have been instrumental in providing vital assistance to affected communities, with a particular focus on the most vulnerable individuals and families.

Through their comprehensive response, they have been able to address critical needs by offering emergency shelter, essential food supplies, clean water, healthcare services, psychosocial support, and livelihood assistance, both within Ukraine and in neighboring countries.

Caritas Approach

Building on the Emergency by Planning for the Future

Caritas belongs to the community it serves and, therefore, is active at the grassroots level before, during and after an emergency strikes.

Caritas accompanies those in need, and not only responding when disasters happen, but also in everyday life, at a parishes level, when no one else answers to the needs of the invisible ones.

During this past year, for Caritas, the need to work together as a Confederation has been underlined by the increasingly global nature of the challenges we faced. Whether we are talking about the Ukraine war, the resulting world economic crisis, climate change, or natural disasters, best solutions could only be found through collaborative efforts of Caritas member organisations.

Our response is focused on broad-based and continuing local capacity strengthening and technical support to enable the national Caritas organizations to deliver safe, effective, and dignified services at scale.
