If I would be asked to give Caritas a human face, I would give it a woman’s face. We do not need to do a serious research to find out that the majority of care workers in Caritas are women. It is just visible! At the same time, research has shown that the majority of ...

Caritas Finland was founded in 1960 and works to build a better world through activities that focus on helping the poor and marginalised people in the Diocese of Helsinki, which comprises all of Finland, and abroad. Their range of projects includes development aid and emergency relief, providing advice to immigrants and parishes, a social café in the capital Helsinki and a school sponsorship programme in Uganda.
The aid Caritas Finland provides is primarily development aid and emergency relief. Aid projects in India and Uganda have improved the living conditions and quality of life for thousands for people, as has providing access to clean drinking water and sanitation in Bolivia. In the first half of the 2010s, Caritas Finland assisted in the implementation of a development project to finance a Women’s Support Centre in Moldova to provide a safe place for victims of domestic violence and human trafficking, as well as their children.
Caritas Finland also has a sponsorship programme in Uganda that supports children orphaned because of AIDS, or who are otherwise unable to pay for their education.
Domestically, Caritas Finland provides advice to immigrants and parishes to assist with integration efforts.
Caritas Finland’s main office is located in Helsinki and has a staff of approximately 3 people and 30 volunteers.
Caritas Finland is a member of Caritas Internationalis and its regional organisation, Caritas Europa, and works in close partnership with them to provide emergency aid and support to countries impacted by natural disasters and armed conflict. Caritas Finland also works to provide information and contacts for other Caritas Organisations, e.g. Caritas Latvia, to assist them with their domestic aid programmes.
