Cuba hurricane appeal
01 October 2008
Caritas is appealing for US$1 million to help 25,000 people in Cuba who were affected by Hurricanes Ike and Gustav.
In a three-month project, Caritas aims to provide food, construction materials and kitchen and hygiene kits to those recovering from the hurricanes which swept over the island in late August and early September.
Up to two million people were affected by the hurricanes, which hit the island within two weeks of each other.
The storms had a serious impact on almost 450,000 people – many of whom either lost completely or suffered severe damage to their homes. The Island of Youth to the south of Cuba was one of the worst hit areas.
Caritas relief efforts will be country-wide. Five thousand families will be provided with food rations consisting of rice, beans and sugar as well as kits to cook with.
Caritas will provide 2,500 families with hygiene kits and 1,050 families will receive contstruction materials to repair the roofs of their houses.
Caritas Cuba’s projects include services for senior citizens and children with learning difficulties, as well as education and training programmes.
