Caritas Hungary, which is known as Caritas Hungaricaor Katolikus Karitász provides assistance for those in need and also supports social and health programmes. It is the official relief agency of the Catholic Church and is guided by the rules and regulations of international aid organisations. The agency coordinates and manages programmes dealing with social and charity issues through monasteries and diocesan offices. Its core activities are fundraising, social and charity services and national and international emergency aid.

Caritas Hungary plays an important role in international work when it comes to providing social services and it supports the everyday life of Hungarians abroad. The agency’s humanitarian and disaster relief assistance delivers urgent supplies whenever natural disasters occur, such as floods, earthquakes and storms. In 2013, when heavy rains triggered record high floods to hit Budapest, forcing more than 1,200 people to evacuate their homes, Caritas Hungary provided vital emergency provisions and services, such as food, clean water, medicine, clothing and shelter to families at risk.

In addition, Caritas Hungary social and charitable services include an Easter food collection for the poor and marginalised, summer camps and educational supplies for children, and a campaign during the Christmas season to provide food and clothing for needy families and children.

Caritas Hungary main office in Budapest employs around 1000 volunteers to take care of the social service initiatives. The main office guides and coordinates the activities of the 15 Caritas diocesan offices throughout Hungary.

Caritas Hungary is a member of Caritas Internationalis and Caritas Europa, often collaborating with Caritas members to develop and implement their programmes, such as Caritas Romania and Caritas Austria.
