Caritas Africa represents 45 national members in sub-Saharan Africa. The emphasis is on respect for the principle of local autonomy for all activities carried out on a local scale. The local members are the first to guarantee the service and take action because they are integrated in the local communities. Caritas Africa focuses on economic justice, peace building, and human development. Caritas Africa has to contend with some of the largest and most complex humanitarian emergencies, in Darfur, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zimbabwe.
