In a recent collaboration with Catholic Relief services and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) following floods across the country, Caritas Mali helped to distribute food to displaced families, rehabilitate schools and provide school supplies for flood-affected schoolchildren. Of the 10 million inhabitants of Mali, 7.3 million reside in rural areas; half are under 18 and a significant proportion of the population has no adequate access to public health or education services. There are 5,000 street children in Bamako alone. Caritas Mali runs Action Enfants de Tous, a project whose objectives are protection, professional training, education and rehabilitation for children in difficulty. The scheme includes an advice centre, two shelters and a workshop where children can learn trades. Another project run by Caritas Mali in partnership with other organizations is Right to Play, which is aimed at the development of children and young people: young people are brought together to play games and develop their understanding of peace and peaceful behaviour and how these fit into their lives, and to raise community awareness of the services provided by the partner organizations for children in disadvantaged areas. |
