Caritas Mauritius was founded in 1966, focusing on helping families suffering from the high unemployment that prevailed after independence was declared in 1968. The agency shifted its focus in 1993 towards social pastoral care, inspired by Pope Paul VI’s 1967 encyclical that invited organisations of the Catholic Church to work on development as a means of combating poverty.

Mauritius has enjoyed a successful economy for many years, based on sugar and clothing exports and upmarket tourism. But exports have been hit by strong competition from low-cost textile producers and the loss of sugar subsidies from Europe.

Caritas Mauritius is involved in various activities to help improve people’s livelihoods. Its work today includes:

  • Training in adult literacy;
  • Providing night shelters;
  • Liaising between non-governmental organisations and state authorities.

Caritas Mauritius is also active in projects addressing:

  • Education;
  • Community health and access to sanitation;
  • Environmental management;
  • Enhancement of livelihoods;
  • Care for the elderly;
  • Emergency relief.
