In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), violence against women is a frequent problem. Rape has become a weapon of war in the country. In many instances, armed men will overrun a village, attack the inhabitants, rape the women, destroy crops and leave in their wake a path of terror and destruction.

For those who manage to escape, they must return to their villages in the aftermath and try to heal the wounds left behind and re-build their communities with a culture of peace.

This is the story told in the new comic strip: Roza or the Courage to Choose Life, written and illustrated by Congolese artist Séraphin Kajibwami and published by the international development organization Development and Peace (Caritas Canada) in collaboration with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). The comic strip includes an overview of the issues affecting this resource-rich country as well as its history.

It was launched on 5 April in the presence of Sister Marie-Bernard Alima, the secretary general of the Justice and Peace Episcopal Commission of the DRC and Most Rev. Nicolas Djomo, President of the Conference of Bishops of the DRC, both of whom are working to bring peace to their country.

Cairtas supports numerous projects in Congo aimed at strengthening democracy, empowering women, ensuring fair control of natural resources and establishing peace in the country.
