“Los cariocas sí que saber dar acogida, mi corazón los abraza a todos con afecto Universal. El Cristo redentor los acoge y los recibe. Dios quiere confirmar su fe y yo quiero ser confirmado por la fe de ustedes”.
Los peregrinos de todos los rincones del planeta, comenzaron a llegar a primera hora de la mañana y no pararon acercarse hasta la hora de la indicada de inicio de la acogida. La aparición de Francisco fue a las 18 hs, bajó de un helicóptero, subió al Papa móvil y recorrió 3 km por la rambla de Copacabana, saludando a las miles de personas que se acercaron para verlo. El entusiasmo y la adrenalina no cesó en ningún momento y fue acompañada, por bailes, oraciones y canciones de todo tipo como: “Ésta es la juventud del Papa”, “No trae ni oro ni plata pero sí el tesoro más grande que es Jesús Cristo”.
El Papa comenzó su mensaje de bienvenida, agradeciendo a los cariocas y haciendo una broma referida a la fe de los cariocas que superó al frio y a la lluvia, algo que detestan los brasileros. Luego, pidió un minuto de silencio por el accidente que sufrieron jóvenes de la Guayana Francesa cuando se dirigían a la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud. En nombre de Benedicto XVI, agradeció a los jóvenes el haber respondido a su invitación de participar en esta Jornada Mundial: “Esta semana, Río se convierte en el centro de la Iglesia, en su corazón vivo y joven, porque ustedes han respondido con generosidad y entusiasmo a la invitación que Jesús les ha hecho a estar con él, a ser sus amigos”.
Haciendo alusión al Cristo Redentor en el Corcovado, símbolo de la ciudad carioca, Francisco aseguró que, el Cristo Redentor, abraza, bendice y de la bienvenida. Hizo mención del fragmento del Evangelio cuando Jesús llama a sus discípulos a orillas del lago de Tiberíades y les preguntó: ¿Quieres ser mi discípulo? ¿Quieres ser mi amigo? ¿Quieres ser testigo del Evangelio?, preguntas que nos sigue haciendo hoy Jesús invitándonos a seguirlo.
El evento continuo, con un espectáculo de danzas típicas brasileras, un desfile de banderas, la lectura de mensajes de jóvenes representantes de todos los continentes al Papa y con la voz de cantantes representativos de Brasil de la talla de Fafá de Belém. Se sintió durante toda la jornada la emoción, la alegría y la fe de los fieles que transmitía un sentimiento de esperanza en la Iglesia y en el Sumo Pontífice que emocionaba.
The Pope welcomes pilgrims in Rio for WYD

Pilgrims from the four corners of the earth began to arrive early for Pope Francis’s welcoming ceremony. Pope Francis appeared at 6pm. He got out of the helicopter and got into his Popemobile and travelled the 3km along Copacobana beachfront, greeting thousands of people who had been waiting to see him.
Enthusiasm and adrenalin ran high and were accompanied by dancing, praying and people singing things like: “We are the Pope’s youth”, “He’s not got any silver or gold but the most precious treasure is Jesus Christ.”
Pope Francis began his welcome by thanking the people of Rio (los cariocas) and joking about how their faith was enough to overcome the cold and rain – something that Brazilians hate.
He then asked for a minute’s silence for the accident involving a group of young people coming to World Youth Day from French Guyana and in which a young French woman was killed.
In the name of Benedict XVI, he thanked the young people for having answered his invitation to take part in this World Youth Day: “This week, Rio has become the centre of the Church and its heart because you have answered with generosity and enthusiasm Jesus’s call to be with him and be his friends.”
Referring to the Christ the Redeemer statue on top of Corcovado, the symbol of Rio, Francis assured us that Christ the Redeemer embraces us, blesses and welcomes us. He also mentioned the Gospel story where Jesus called his disciples on Lake Tiberias and asked them: “Do you want to be my disciple? Do you want to be my friend? Do you want to be a witness to my Gospel?”, questions that Jesus continues to ask us today, inviting us to follow him.
The event continued with a performance of Brazilian dance, a parade of flags from numerous nations and organisations, the reading of messages to the Pope from young people from all continents and with Brazilian singers.
The whole day was full of emotion, joy and the faith that gave a sense of hope in the Church in the Holy Father. It was something that was quite thrilling.
