Since its independence in 1990, Kyrgyzstan has always had a high rate of poverty, and the COVID-19 pandemic has considerably worsened the economic situation in the former Soviet Republic.

One of the most serious consequences of widespread poverty is the dire state of the national education system, the reform of which began in the early 1990s and has so far proved ineffective. In addition, the low salaries of teachers are encouraging them to seek employment in private schools.
Caritas Kyrgyzstan is addressing the serious shortcomings of the national education system through a programme that provides quality state examination preparation for 250 students from Suzak and Bishkek. For each of the three academic years between 2021-2024, Caritas will provide these students with free classes in mathematics, Russian, Kyrgyz, chemistry and biology.

Over the past five years, hundreds of students have been able to enrol in university thanks to Caritas Kyrgyzstan’s courses.

Caritas Kyrgyzstan was founded in 2011 and is carrying out several charitable and educational projects in the fight against poverty in the landlocked, mountainous Central Asian country with a predominantly Muslim population. The local Caritas reaches out to the poor, vulnerable and excluded, regardless of race or religion, to build a more inclusive world based on justice and brotherly love. Caritas also runs poultry farms and workshops for former alcoholics and drug addicts so that they can acquire job skills.

250 students need help to finish their studies and enrol in university in 2024

Help us give them a future!
