Caritas believes that it is a scandal that nearly a billion people are hungry today in a world that has the resources to feed everyone.
The EA program 38 which has since January 2013 began with the reinforcement of capacity building of Caritas Sahel (Burkina Faso, Niger, Senegal and Mali), with the aim to provide an effective emergency response and coordinated directly or indirectly people affected by the conflict in Mali.

With thousands of others, Nawal escaped to one of Sudan’s camps for displaced people. They were safer there, but could no longer earn a living by farming. Some camp residents do tasks like brickmaking, making enough money to buy the day’s kilo or two of grain.

Balama was a village once located on the shores of Lake Chad, in the east of the county. Since the 1960s, the lake has been greatly reduced. A changing climate and uncontrolled use of water for irrigated agricultures combined with population pressure, has led to the receding of the lake to 10 percent of its original surface.
It is only natural that the women work together in the field in Hadj al-Dérib. All 120 women of the village are members of a committee, which takes care of the cultivation of various crops as well as the granary and the mill. Each committee has a president, a vice-president and a secretary.
