Caritas Iceland was founded in 1989 to help the poor and less fortunate and those who have suffered injustice. Caritas Iceland became a member of Caritas Internationalis in 1991 and has no paid staff as it relies heavily on the strength of its volunteers to carry out its activities.
The primary objectives of Caritas Iceland are two fundraising events during the year, one in Advent and one in Lent. The funds raised during Advent are used to support the sick and people with physical and learning difficulties, the elderly, as well as socially disadvantaged children. The funds raised during Lent support projects in poor countries in Africa, Asia and South America, in cooperation with Caritas Denmark.
Caritas Iceland main office in Reykjavik has a staff of 10 volunteers. As a member of Caritas Internationalis and Europa, the agency collaborates with the global Caritas network to develop and implement its programmes.
Updates from Iceland

Caritas is sending a strong message to delegates as they begin meeting in Madrid for COP25. The message is simple. We must work together.

Advent is a very special time. A time of great love and celebration, remembering our neighbours and growing in togetherness.

Migration both across borders and from rural areas to the cities is a huge phenomenon in the Amazon. Caritas is there to assist them.

Hope has been awoken by the historic Amazon Synod. We reflect on this remarkable moment in the Church and what it means for Caritas and the people we work alongside.

Caritas workers in Al-Hasakah provide aid to displaced families who were forced from their homes by violence at the start of the military operation in early October.

Unleashing the power of the creative arts to promote deeper understanding of migration is the focus of Caritas’ Share the Journey Campaign for its Global Week of Action 2019.

Successful human trafficking prevention can happen only if the root causes of forced migrations are addressed and the migrants are treated with dignity.

Caritas confederation has been involved with SDGs since 2015 and is currently implementing programmes worldwide through national members that are making valuable contributions to deliver Agenda 2030.
