Caritas Ireland is established under the name Trócaire, the Irish word for “mercy”. It was founded in 1973 as the overseas development agency of the Catholic Church in Ireland. The organisation was given a dual mandate: to alleviate poverty and injustice abroad, and to educate people at home about the structural causes of poverty.

Trócaire works in over 20 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. The organisation’s key programme areas are resource rights, women’s empowerment, and humanitarian response.

As well as funding development and emergency programmes overseas, Trócaire campaigns on issues in Ireland to raise awareness amongst the public on the causes of poverty in the developing world. In recent years Trócaire’s campaigns have concentrated on issues related to climate change and climate justice. This includes highlighting the impact of the biofuels industry on small farmers in the global south, calling for an end to the investment of public money in the fossil fuel industry, and calling for binding climate change legislation in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Trócaire’s head office is in Maynooth, Co. Kildare. The organisation also has regional offices in Belfast, Cork and Dublin, as well as offices in 14 countries abroad.

Trócaire is a member of Caritas Europa and Caritas Internationalis and works closely with Caritas partners, especially in emergency situations.
