Turkish Earthquake: Resilience and Care, Stories of Humanitarian Workers

“It marked my initial experience with a post-earthquake scenario: observing numerous structures in ruins or precarious states was truly astonishing. However, what impressed me the most was listening to the stories I gathered, because they revealed the deep emotional scars such an experience could leave.

Among the individuals I interviewed, one poignant comparison stood out – a volunteer who had witnessed the aftermath of Ukraine conflict explained how earthquakes were a far more harrowing ordeal than bombs. While bombs could be foreseen, earthquake shatter without warning. They disrupted your sleep, catching you in your nightclothes, leaving you exposed and powerless. Others shared how the quake had reshaped their perspective, refocusing their priorities on loved ones, health, and the basic essentials for well-being.

The stories that struck me with a deep sense of injustice were those of immigrants – Syrians, Afghans – who had escaped from decades of war, only to see their rebuilt lives shattered once again.

“How misfortune seems to follow certain individuals,” I pondered, “and how those of us who enjoy comfort should be spurred to extend our helping hands.”

Amidst the heart-wrenching destruction, hope endured. The very victims of the seism emerged as unexpected symbols of resilience and leadership, joining forces not only to reconstruct their individual lives but also to revive their earthquake-battered community. A striking example was a young woman who set up a makeshift sewing workshop within a tent, offering meaningful employment to twenty individuals from the refugee camp. Equally inspiring were two colleagues of mine who, fueled by unwavering commitment, established an organization dedicated to reviving their village through reconstruction and vocational skill enhancement. Their words resonated deeply: “It’s our duty to rise independently, without relying on assistance from others.”

This strength was like a slap in the face for me and an encouragement to always try to bring out the best in difficulties, without expecting solutions to come from others: I am the one who has to step in first, the one responsible for taking care of those around me.

In July, Francesca embarked on a mission to Turkey orchestrated by Caritas Italiana after the seismic event that rocked the region. Caritas Italiana was supporting vulnerable people affected by the shake of last February 6th, along with other Caritas members.

Francesca’s witness shows that when care and human dignity converge, they create a powerful synergy. Through acts of care and solidarity, we affirm and uplift the dignity of others, fostering a sense of belonging and interconnection.
