Two years after Cyclone Idai made landfall in Mozambique and set off a series of unprecedented climate-related disasters, 2.5 million people, almost half of them children, remain in need of humanitarian assistance. More than 3,000 children under the age of five have been diagnosed with life-threatening severe acute malnutrition after harvests were washed away in floodwaters. These children are proof that the victims of the climate crisis are first and foremost, the poor and the very young.

After the Cyclone, Caritas and its partners are still providing support to tens of thousands of affected families, distributing food, heavy-duty tarpaulins, medicines, hygiene kits, clothing, bedding, technical assistance, tools and seeds. Caritas also plans to build houses for the displaced.

In addition to natural disasters and according to UN agencies, anther crisis is affecting the region deeply: the escalation of insurgent activities in Mozambique’s northern province of Cabo Delgado is deteriorating the humanitarian situation of affected populations in the area. More than 11 of the 16 districts in the province have witnessed incessant attacks with a significant rise in the death toll. The number of displaced people has risen from around 1 000 in March 2019 to over 115 000 in March 2020. Over two million people are affected by the crisis.

All caritas members are involved in supporting programs for facing such complex crisis with several emergency agreements to help families displaced by the increase in jihadist attacks in recent months in the Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado

With your generous help, we support programs both that improve income, wellbeing and relationships for marginalized communities in Mozambique and for responding to violence the Islamist known as Al-Shabaab created since 2017.
