Established in 1967 by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, Development and Peace ― Caritas Canada is the official international development organization of the Catholic Church in Canada and the Canadian member of Caritas Internationalis. Its actions are inspired by the values of the Gospel, particularly “the preferential option for the poor.”
The mission of Development and Peace ― Caritas Canada is to support partners in the Global South in their pursuit of alternatives to unjust social, political and economic structures. In the struggle for human dignity, it works in collaboration with groups striving for social change in the North and South, and supports women in their search for social and economic justice.
It also educates the Canadian population on the root causes of poverty and injustice in the Global South and mobilises Canadians towards actions for change.
Development and Peace ― Caritas Canada has community development programs in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East that focus on:
- Equality between men and women;
- Citizen participation and democratic development;
- The management and control of natural resources;
- Ecological Justice;
- Peacebuilding and reconciliation.
The organization also responds to humanitarian crises caused by natural disasters or conflict.
Development and Peace ― Caritas Canada is a democratic movement for social justice with 10,000 individual members and participates in several national and international networks in order to fulfill its mission. The support of these networks, which include Caritas Internationalis, International Cooperation for Development and Solidarity (CIDSE), Cooperation Canada, and KAIROS – Ecumenical Social Justice Initiatives, helps to create a global movement for solidarity with the Global South.
