Caritas Somalia Mindful Approach, Investing in People

“Every day, I walk through the doors of my office nestled within the heart of the Bishopric of Djibouti, the home of Caritas Somalia’s President and Bishop of Djibouti, Msgr. Giorgio Bertin. Though my work keeps me away from the field, it does not hinder my unwavering connection with the realities of Somalia. Maintaining steadfast relationships with local organizations, the government, and other humanitarian entities, we have gradually built channels of communication and mutual trust.

Every quarter, I embark on a journey to Somalia and Hargeisa, overseeing the transformative projects supported by Caritas. With these visits we want to show our commitment, because Caritas Somalia stands by the Somali people, embracing hope and change together.

My primary role revolves around providing assistance through projects that ignite hope and foster skills, employment, and social development. Our aim is to cultivate individual independence while nurturing an atmosphere of respect, especially for minorities. Among the initiatives, we’ve facilitated training in permaculture and tree planting for the community and provided communication courses for Somali journalists. Moreover, Caritas Somalia swiftly intervenes during emergencies, such as the recent drought that ravaged Somalia.

The true beauty of my work lies in witnessing the profound impact on the lives of our beneficiaries.

I was profoundly moved when I met a 31-year-old Somali young women refugee, during the evaluation of a women’s empowerment project in Nairobi. Struggling against society’s conventions, she sought refuge in our project, learning sewing, English, and Swahili. With two months’ rent and a food voucher, her gratitude, especially for the language course, touched my heart. Now, she can connect with others beyond her own community and dream of starting a business, breaking free from societal constraints.

Another positive aspect of my work is being able to interact with Somalis who have decided to get involved together with the diaspora and establish local organizations that have more than just the purpose of humanitarian aid. For instance, I collaborated with a remarkable Somali girl who founded an organization dedicated to restoring ecosystems. Caritas Somalia’s support, including training 23 individuals, predominantly female students, in permaculture practices, showcased the power of collective transformation.

Operating amidst Somalia protracted crisis demands dignified and secure assistance. Caritas Somalia follows a mindful approach, investing in people, especially the youth and women, who hold the key to lasting change. Their resilience and ambition to reshape their lives and secure a brighter future for their children fuel our commitment.

As the day draws to a close, I engage in thought-provoking discussions with Caritas Somalia’s President. Our exchanges delve into Somali politics and culture, enriched by the wisdom of Msgr. Bertin, a foremost expert with 45 years of immersion in the Somali context.
