Caritas Internationalis Contribution to the 14th Summit of the Global Forum on Migration and Development

As a member of the Civil Society Delegation, Caritas Internationalis will participate in the upcoming 14th Summit of the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD), to be held in Geneva from 23-25 January 2024. This three-day meeting is an opportunity for States and key stakeholders to discuss major migration challenges and priorities for policy action. The Summit will be preceded by preparatory meetings of various stakeholders, including the Civil Society Preparatory Meeting on 22 January.

Under the theme of the Summit, “From environmental concerns to cultural aspects of migration; taking an inclusive approach to address the challenges and increase the opportunities of human mobility“, six thematic priorities will be discussed in Roundtables and 22 side events. These include: the impact of climate change on human mobility; rights and migration; diasporas as agents of economic, social and cultural development; labour migration and economic inclusion of migrants; improving the perception of migration in public opinion; multi-level governance for improved migration management.

As a 162-member Confederation, Caritas Internationalis has been actively involved, since its foundation in 1951, in addressing the root causes of forced migration and in welcoming, assisting, integrating and protecting the human rights of migrants, refugees and displaced persons throughout their migratory journey and regardless of their legal status.

Caritas Internationalis has been actively involved in the GFMD process and has provided key inputs to the civil society advocacy papers that will represent our joint civil society messages at the Summit.

Since 2007, the Global Forum on Migration and Development has been the most important informal, non-binding, voluntary, government-led process, bringing together experts from all regions and countries on migration and economic, social and political development. It has operated in a participatory manner, involving governments and policy makers from a varied background, as well as major stakeholders.

The CI policy paper is a further contribution of Caritas Internationalis to the upcoming GFMD Summit and presents Caritas inputs and recommendations on the six thematic priorities to be discussed at the Summit.
