Caritas Uruguay is an organisation established by the Uruguayan Bishops’ Conference and a member of the Caritas confederation, which for more than 50 years has aimed to coordinate, support and strengthen all the solidarity initiatives of the Catholic Church in Uruguay.

We accompany people deprived of their liberty, as well as the sick. We implement educational support and peace-building projects. We carry out research into poverty and provide support regarding such issues as addiction and the defence of human rights. We strengthen solidarity initiatives throughout the country.

As a family, we work together as a team with local communities and organisations on dignifying and promoting the most excluded and vulnerable people.

Noteworthy among our advocacy initiatives are:

The pastoral care of prisoners: We accompany people deprived of their liberty, creating spaces where they may share and express their wishes, sorrows and hopes. We strive to raise public awareness of this situation.

Pastoral care regarding the prevention of and rehabilitation from addiction: We offer training tools and spaces and sharing of experiences, giving priority to preventive actions. Counselling and accompaniment for people and communities involved in this issue.

Research: We promote the research project “Broaden the perspectives of poverty in Uruguay”, which encourages us to reconsider poverty from the standpoint of our spirituality, gathering the opinions of the various community actors and establishing a dialogue with the support of academia and from a pastoral and theological perspective.

Peaceful coexistence: We are moving ahead with the “Coexistence Without Violence” programme, which comes within the methodology of the Schools of Forgiveness and Reconciliation (ESPERE), created by the Reconciliation Foundation. The ESPERE schools are a tool for tackling the violent conflicts we experience on a daily basis.

Strengthening of and participation in other projects

Volunteering and strengthening of actions: We accompany various social projects via strengthening of communications, volunteering management, seeking resources and transparent financial administration.

Institutional relations: We believe in teamwork, which is why we support and participate in joint initiatives together with other Uruguayan civil society organisations and public bodies.
