Caritas-Spes Ukraine

Caritas-Spes, which means “Love” and “Hope” in Latin, is a charitable mission of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine. It was founded by the Roman Catholic Bishops of Ukraine in May 1995 and was later registered by the State Committee on Religious Issues in September 1996. Caritas-Spes Ukraine has been a member of Caritas International as well as Caritas Europe since 1999. Caritas was the first organization to offer humanitarian assistance after Ukraine’s independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Caritas received several contributions, including clothing, medicine, and equipment, from international benefactors to assist the poor.

Caritas-Spes has done much work to help people in Ukraine. Thanks to the donations of various sponsors, mostly from abroad, such as Germany, Austria, France, and the Catholic organization Renovabis, Caritas’ activity has grown.

After the Chernobyl APP, Caritas funded assistance for children who had suffered, either by sending them to health resorts in Ukraine or to hospitals abroad. Caritas specializes in the improvement of children’s health, yearly from 2,000 to 3,000 of children improve their health in our recreation centers: Jablunytsia (Ivano-Frankivsk region), Berdiansk (Zaporizia region), Zarichany (not far from Zhytomyr), Oleksandrivka (Zhytomyr region) and Pnikut (Volyn region).

The main concern of Caritas-Spes from the very beginning has been for the children. Besides, rehabilitation centers, Caritas-Spes organizes and runs 25 family-style homes for orphans, dozens of day care centers both for pre-school and school-age children including children with disabilities homeless children.

Other social projects of Caritas-Spes are oriented to support the youth, seniors, the needy, addicts, and people living with HIV/AIDS. Our mission also offers employment to people in economically depressed areas of Ukraine by running self-sustainability projects.

Caritas-Spes has up to 80 regional centers in the whole territory of Ukraine that actively organize assistance to those who need it regardless of greed, race or ethnicity through soup kitchen, social centers, houses of mercy, medical cabinets, rehabilitation centers etc. Caritas-Spes relies on generous donations to continue in its important work.
