The first Caritas activities in Montenegro were undertaken in 1979 when a major earthquake affected the southern part of Montenegro. The agency’s next important phase in the development of their work was during the period from 1993 – 1998 when they provided humanitarian assistance to refugees from Croatia, Bosnia, Herzegovina and later internally displaces persons from Kosovo crossing the border into Montenegro. Originally, the agency was part of the Caritas structure of Yugoslavia, but then in later years was part of a union when the republics of Serbia and Montenegro united. In 2011, the agency established a separate national Caritas agency in Montenegro becoming what it is known as today.

Caritas Montenegro’s range of work includes various programmes and initiatives; development of social services for the elderly and people with disabilities, youth work, healthcare, development of civil society, development of social economy (unemployment), and urgent assistance for people in need.

Caritas Montenegro’s main office in Bar serves as the focal point for the two dioceses Caritas offices: Caritas of Bar Archdiocese and Caritas of Kotor Diocese. The agency’s organisational structure includes 90 paid staff and 150 volunteers that carry out their services in day care centres for children and young people with disabilities, Home Care services for elderly and persons with disabilities, day care centers for the elderly, mobile care for addicted people, educational and informational centers for young and unemployed people.
